Forestry Professionals List
Landowners are strongly encouraged to follow the referral procedure set by the Conservation District. The district forester is better able to collaborate with landowners that use this process. In addition, the landowner is more likely to find a consultant that suits their project needs. The district forester may have more information about providers than is available on this site.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) maintains a list of Qualified Foresters. These individuals are registered with the state and can write the management plans required by the Qualified Forest Program (QFP). The list of Qualified Foresters is available here.
Michigan State University maintains a list of Consulting Foresters. Consulting Foresters may or may not also be Qualified Foresters. If you are a landowner looking for forestry assistance that does not include a management plan for the QFP, a Consulting Forester may be able to help.
Please note that both Qualified Foresters and Consulting Foresters are self-employed professional foresters whose business involves managing non-industrial, private forestland for a fee. Thus, the consultant works for the landowner. Fees may be negotiable and are based on hourly rates, per unit rates, or a commission of timber sale proceeds.
The Conservation Districts do not endorse any consultant over another. You are advised to check references when hiring any type of contractor.
