The first step to successful property management of any size is to know your environment. Make an effort to understand the conditions you're working with. Pay attention to what species are already growing well for hints to these conditions.

They key is to work WITH your environment, not against it. Changes to your property are absolutely possibly but like all good things, it will take time. Your land is an investment, not a get rich quick scheme.

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is a helpful tool that serves as a standard for many growers, Gladwin County mostly falls under Zone 5b which is determined by how low our minimum temperature gets on average. Precipitation is key to understanding your climate and will determine your growing conditions.

Next, know your soil. Soil is one of the most important factors for growth. Texture (sand, silt, clay), moisture retention, and organic matter is the tip of the iceberg when knowing your soil. Get the basics down and your plants will thank you!

Keeping your climate and soil in mind, solidifying your property goals will help direct your efforts. Every property is unique as well as the goals we have for our properties. So no two management plans will be exactly the same. Stop in to a local Conservation District or NRCS/USDA office, search for online resources, check out your local library, and talk to your neighbors. Learn as you go and understand that there is no one correct way to manage your land.
